Cant understand voltage – want help?
Hi, I have a small hobby dc motor, it says will work from 1.5V-6V. I attached it to a AA 1.5V battery and no problem it spins away.
I also have a small Solar panel, i took it outside measured the voltage on a multimeter ( scale was 0-20V ) gave a reading or around 5-6V so i hooked it up to the motor – it just about spins. How can a bigger voltage give less power??
The Solar Panel cannot generate enough power to drive the motor.
The terminate voltage of the solar panel is 5-6V. Under no load condition, the multimter will read this voltage. When there is a load there will be a current flow. The internal resistance of solar cell causes the voltage to drop in the solar cell output. Under the load of motor, the measured volatge across the solar cell is significantly lower than the no load voltage of 5-6V.
There are two solutions to this problem.
1. Use several similar solar panels in parallel to drive the motor. Each solar panel will share a portion of the loading current of the motor.
2. Use a larger solar panel that can supply the required current to the motor. Check the solar panel and motor specification for current and power in addition to voltage.
